Surely we can’t go another season complaining about who to play left back? The Kolarov or Clichy debate is one that splits most opinions, Kolarov is better at attacking but Clichy is better at defending etc. But I think one thing is clear, neither of these left backs are in the top five in the league and that needs to be addressed. I think we have three options, with the last my preferred choice.
The first option would be to blood in Karim Rekik (20). He’s more comfortable playing in central defence but at his age he can be moulded into our left back for the next 10 years. He would be behind Clichy in the pecking order with Kolarov reportedly moving to Italy but much like Mourinho did with Zouma, Rekik can be put in to the team every so often when Clichy is ready to move on.
Secondly, we can buy a new foreign left back with a big reputation, although the best left-backs Alba and Alaba won’t be leaving Barca or Bayern any time soon. The only left backs that could be available are possibly Lucas Digne of PSG (21) or Marcel Schmelzer (27), a bid for the latter would test Dortmund’s resolve after their disappointing Bundesliga campaign and Klopp’s exit.
I would personally buy an English left-back. Aaron Cresswell (28) from West Ham has performed well this season however I would be trying to sign Andy Robertson (21) from Hull. The young left-back is a solid defender who likes to get forward and has a fantastic delivery. It would be an area that isn’t one of the most important on the pitch and we wouldn’t be paying a massive premium like we’re rumoured to be paying for Wilshere or Sterling.
