If you were told at the beginning of the transfer window that a Spanish goalkeeper was departing Manchester United you would assume Real Madrid had signed David de Gea. However in an odd twist of events it seems as if De Gea may stay at Old Trafford for the immediate future, while his probable replacement Victor Valdes will be the one exiting.

United manager Louis van Gaal spoke to the press in the United States as the club prepare for their pre-season matches. The Dutchman cited a lack of professionalism as the reason for Valdes being available for transfer. He claimed the 33 year old Spanish 'keeper "refused to play" in the reserves.

Valdes was a surprise absentee from the United tour squad, but van Gaal confirmed that his omission was not through injury; "He doesn't follow my philosophy. There is no place for someone like that."

van Gaal also commented on the De Gea situation, praising the player's attitude. He said any move for De Gea was dependent on the goalkeeper. However one thing is for certain, if De Gea does depart from the club Victor Valdes will not be the one to replace him.

As is always the case, social media did not take long to give their opinion on the Valdes news:
