Joe Hart: Hart surprisingly had very little to do, but the sign of a quality goalkeeper is staying focused all game despite not being involved and he did, smothering Hazard’s albeit poor effort at 1-0 which could have changed the game. (6)

Bacary Sagna: Pellegrini opted for Sagna over fan favourite Pablo Zabaleta and was rewarded for his decision. Sagna performed his defensive duties well and was always in support of Navas when he needed to be. He kept Eden Hazard quiet all game, in particular making a fantastic slide tackle on half-way when the Belgian skipped past a few challenged in a dangerous counter. (7)

Vincent Kompany: Everyone’s been desperate to say this since his solid game against West Brom but now it can be said with certainty, Kompany is back to his best. City’s captain was fantastic. Keeping quiet a noisy Diego Costa and marshalling his defence to yield only one real chance all game for the visitors. This will feel like a new signing for City. (8)

Eliaquim Mangala: The central defender dispelled some of his demons from last season with a solid performance. He made his debut against Chelsea last year and even against the free-scoring new boy Diego Costa he was the best player on the pitch that day. City will be hoping he continues this level of performance should he not leave before the window closes. (7)

Aleksander Kolarov: Again this will also feel like a new signing for City. Kolarov was fantastic. The partnership that seems to be emerging down that left-hand side with him and Sterling will be exciting City fans. He never looked in any danger defensively and he will feel unfortunate not to have an assist after inch perfect deliveries to Aguero and Mangala which should have been converted. (8)

Fernandinho: Fernandinho is an ever-present in this City side and showed it again today. He covers so much ground, particularly when Toure loses the ball high up the pitch. He doesn’t get sucked in and looks to have been told that the area in front of the back four is his if he defends it properly, and he certainly did yesterday. (7)

Yaya Toure: The big question after his brace against West Brom would be whether the Ivorian could replicate his performance against tougher opposition and he could. He was solid in the tackle and aerially and his move defensive performance will give him more plaudits than any goals. (7)

Jesus Navas: Navas looked a little less aimless today, giving Azpilicueta a tough time without really producing the quality that City are desperate for him to deliver. He looks to be the one who will be demoted to the bench should De Bruyne make his move. (6)

Raheem Sterling: The British record transfer again looked dangerous and much like Jefferson Montero last week, made the best right-back in the league look completely out of his depth. He was a constant threat and will be to most right-backs who don’t match the pace he has, many times he squared up Ivanovic then drove to the by-line leaving the Serbian in his wake. (7)

David Silva: What. A. Player. This guy makes it all look so easy. It only took his 30 seconds for the wizard to slide a ball through the eye of a needle to Aguero. He ghosts past players and seems to have found his home just behind Aguero and infront of the opposition back four. An absolute joy to watch. (8)

Sergio Aguero: The sign of a world-class striker is not to get frustrated if things aren’t going your way, and that shows the difference between Aguero and his counterpart Diego Costa. The Argentine was doing everything to break through but Begovic stood tall and earned praise from Aguero after he kept out his third effort in quick succession. But the league’s top scorer from last season kept plugging away and dragged his side in front before half-time. He, much like Silva, is a crucial part of everything City do going forward and if he replicates his form over the last few seasons, City can win the title at a canter. (8)

Man of the match: Tough one to call, I'm going to lean toward Silva just over Aguero.
