A 3-1 victory for Manchester United over their old rivals Liverpool has heaped pressure onto Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers. After a stuttering first half United were a cut above in the second, so let's take a look at the players that impressed.

David de Gea: 7 - Had to do nothing but pass the ball in the first half but was called into action during the second. Almost cost his side a goal with a poor pass straight to a Liverpool forward (which led to the ball being cleared off the line). He redeemed himself after that with two good saves to keep United in front. Could do nothing about Benteke's brilliant strike.

Matteo Darmian: 7 - Continued to be United's most consistent player. Put in another solid performance down the right-flank, giving the opposition nothing. Was able to get forward a little in the first half but did not have the best delivery. An all-around solid defensive performance however.

Chris Smalling: 7 - Another good performance from United's emerging central defender. Made the vital clearance in the 6-yard box after De Gea's mistake and had good distribution and positioning throughout the match. He handled the physically imposing Christian Benteke well.

Daley Blind: 9 - The Man of the Match. Broke the deadlock with a nice curling strike from the edge of the box and followed it up with a clearance off the line at the other end to keep United in the lead. Defended comfortably for the most part and maintained his high distribution standards.

Luke Shaw: 8 - Another impressive performance from Shaw on United's left. Was solid defensively, like his fellow full-back, Darmian, but offered more going forward than the Italian. Shaw was consistently over-lapping Memphis Depay and Ashley Young, making it a tough afternoon for Nathaniel Clyne.

Michael Carrick: 7 - Was one of United's better players in the first half, controlling the tempo and switching the play well with some nice passing. Faded in the second however and eventually was subbed out for fresh legs. A calm performance from the veteran midfielder.

Bastian Schweinsteiger: 8 - His best performance in a United shirt. Along with Carrick he controlled the tempo of the match from midfield, keeping the play ticking over. Was untested by Liverpool in the first half but he and Carrick looked like a solid platform for United to build upon.

Juan Mata: 6 - A largely ineffectual match on the right for Juan Mata. He struggled to break down a defensive Liverpool in the first half, and was beaten physically by Joe Gomez on a few occasions. He did however get the clever assist for Blind's goal. Still needs to impose himself more in general play.

Ander Herrera: 7 - A difficult first-half where he struggled to find space, Herrera turned it around in the second. He smashed the penalty he won high into the goal of Simon Mignolet to cap off an industrious performance. Constantly worked hard to find space and make himself available for a pass.

Memphis Depay: 5 - Continued what has been an average start to his Premier League career. Was beaten soundly by Nathaniel Clyne, giving away possession often and failing to provide any damaging crosses. Struggled to get into the flow of the game and was substituted at half-time.

Marouane Fellaini: 6 - Was asked to do an unfamiliar job as striker and toiled away all day. He held the ball up well and at times proved to cause some trouble for Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel. Did have two half chances which he failed to take advantage of after some poor touches. Proved he is a useful option but looked better later in the game when he dropped deeper into midfield.

Ashley Young: 7 - Replaced Memphis at half-time and it proved to be the correct decision. His willingness to run directly at Clyne changed the dynamic of the match, winning the free-kick that lead to United's opening goal. Put in a solid shift apart from that and showed why he is a valuable squad player.

Anthony Martial: 7 - Wow. What a debut!  Struggled to get involved in the match as soon as he came on the pitch, but grew more confident as the game wore on. Had a couple of 'almost' moments with some audacious attempts at passing and dribbles, but really made his mark after he scored the winning goal. A mazy dribble directly at Skrtel and a cool finish across the face of Mignolet and into the bottom corner.

Morgan Schneiderlin: 6 - Came on in the 72nd minute to help see the game out and was solid. Hard to make a real judgement after such little time on the pitch.
