On a weekend where their rivals dropped points, Manchester United shrugged off a stuttering first 25 minutes to ultimately claim a vital three points.
David De Gea: 9 - There was nothing he could do for the two goals but his late saves won United the three points. First it was a spectacular one-handed reflex save from a Jose Fonte header, before a great diving save to keep out Victor Wanyama's long-range effort.
Matteo Darmian: 5 - Not a good performance from the Italian. Was substituted at half-time after being turned inside out by Dusan Tadic in the first-half. After an impressive beginning to the United career he looks tired and in need of a rest.
Chris Smalling: 6 - His worst performance of the season so far. Struggled to deal with Graziano Pelle when he was terrorising the United defence in the first 30 minutes of the match. Lost Pelle for Southampton's second goal also.
Daley Blind: 5 - Had his defensive weaknesses exposed by both Pelle and Sadio Mane at different times. Was bullied by Pelle aerially and struggled to cope with Mane's pace.
Marcos Rojo: 6 - Filling in after the injury to Luke Shaw and put in an 'OK' performance. Struggled at times but did attempt to create attacks down United's left side. Just his second appearance of the season so needs to get match fitness.
Michael Carrick: 6 - A decent but unimpressive performance from Carrick. Did not appear to have the usual time and space on the ball he usually does. Struggled to really impose himself on the match against Wanyama's physical presence.
Morgan Schneiderlin: 7 - Put in a good shift as he returned to his old stomping ground. Kept play ticking over with his accurate passing and made some good tackles and interceptions.
Juan Mata: 6 - Was very isolated out on the right for a long period of time. Although eventually he began to drift to get himself involved more. Did not help Darmian out a lot defensively and would have received a 5 rating if not for the fact he scored.
Wayne Rooney: 5 - Somehow still manages to start and not get subbed off despite how bad his performances are. Was totally ineffective in the first-half and broke down United's attacks. Did improve slightly in the second but was unconvincing in the #10 role.
Memphis Depay: 6 - Struggled to make an impact in the first-half and at times made the wrong decision with the ball. Looked more threatening in the second and was the better of United's two wide men.
Anthony Martial: 9 - Along with De Gea he was United's best player. Showed that he has ice running through his veins with two very composed finishes. Provided good movement and pace up-front and proved to be the difference when Untied had momentum.
Antonio Valencia: 6 - Decent cameo. Still showed signs of some defensive naivety but perhaps that is due to rustiness. May be needed in the next few matches to allow Darmian to have a rest.
Bastian Schweinsteiger: 7 - Made a huge difference when he was on the pitch. Played a clever ball to Depay which ultimately set up United's third goal.
Paddy McNair: 6 - Did what was required of him in his short time on the pitch. Made one very threatening run up the left flank.
