This defeat will see more pressure heaped onto already under fire Chelsea boss, Jose Mourinho.
This was Chelsea’s fourth defeat in their last six games across all competitions.
Chelsea went behind in the 52nd minute through a Jonathan Walters efforts.
Chelsea somehow managed to hit back in the 90th minute through first-half substitute, Loic Remy. The injury-time equaliser appeared to have saved the Blues from embarrassment.
Stoke held on to bring to game into penalties and after nine successful attempts Eden Hazard stepped up. The Belgium international was denied by a fantastic save by Stoke’s Butland to send Stoke into the quarter-finals.
Chelsea have now lost all five penalty shootouts under Jose Mourinho.
This season is beginning to shape up into a season to forget for Chelsea.
