Optus has secured exclusive Australian rights to broadcast the English Premier League from next season.

The shock three-year deal, worth more than $50 million, includes "live broadcast coverage and digital rights for broadband and mobile", according to a statement issued by the telecommunications company on Monday morning.

It is a huge blow for the current rights holders Fox Sports, and rich Qatar-owned broadcaster BeIN Sports, who both reportedly submitted competing bids.
