The traditional Boxing Day fixture was not very kind to Louis van Gaal. Under pressure to get results, van Gaal dropped Wayne Rooney to the bench in search of a solution to his team's form woes.
Despite the inclusion of Ander Herrera, something fans have been desperate for, United were completely out-played and out-fought by Stoke City. The lack of fight and desire was inexcusable and suggests the Dutchman may not be in charge for much longer.
A poor header by Memphis Depay gave Stoke the early lead, before a Marko Arnautovic screamer sealed the 2-0 win.
David de Gea: 5 - Could do little for both goals. Was left stranded by Memphis for the first and no goalkeeper was saving the Arnautovic bullet. His passing was a little predictable however - long to Fellaini.
Ashley Young: 5 - Inexplicably raised his hand to touch the ball in the first-half, which ultimately lead to the Arnautovic strike. Tried his best but again exposed a lack of real quality. Average crossing combined with suspect defensive nous means it was a difficult day for Young.
Chris Smalling: 5 - Was left exposed quite frequently because of a weak midfield and a mess of a defence, failed to show the leadership to straighten the ship however. Not United's worst, but a shame he could not do more when more was required.
Daley Blind: 4 - Slipped over a lot, gave away the ball a lot, looked out of his depth a lot. Was left dizzy and dazzled by Shaqiri's Cruyff turn routine in the first-half. Played players onside frequently and was the weak link in an awful defensive display.
Michael Carrick: 5 - Getting ever closer to the time where he must be phased out. Tried hard but his lack of authority, mobility and a stable partner beside him meant he was limited in what he could do. Did not show the leadership to turn it around after going 2-0 down, was basically a non-fixture.
Marouane Fellaini: 4 - Kept the ball reasonably well compared to his teammates, but unfortunately missed a good chance to bring United back to 2-1. Battled against Stoke's big men but just not good enough.
Ander Herrera: 4 - Not good at all. Gave the ball away for fun and seemed to struggle with the conditions. Did nothing positive of note and gave away a few silly fouls.
Memphis Depay: 3 - Horrendous. A sloppy header which gave away the first-goal was followed by a lack of desire to close it down to stop the second. Currently not worthy of the #7 shirt and has been massively overrated after dominating a weak Dutch league.
Anthony Martial: 6 - Had a go early in the match, which is a lot more than his teammates did. Faded when he was moved out wide but is the one shining light in a bleak season. Your 20-year-old striker should not be your best player at this stage but he is.
Wayne Rooney: 6 - Showed some spark, set-up Fellaini with a good chance, but ultimately is not the player he was.
Andreas Pereira: 5 - N/A
